The Incident: In 2017, a pair of surgical scissors was left inside Harshina’s abdomen during a cesarean section at Kozhikode Medical College.
Delayed Justice: It took approximately five years to remove the scissors. Even though Health Minister Veena George promised to stand with Harshina and ensure justice three years ago, the victim claims that promise has not been fulfilled, and the state government is currently turning a blind eye.
Current Struggle: Harshina is currently protesting in front of the Secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram. She states that she is now facing “twice the trouble” she experienced when the scissors were inside and has not received any aid or specialist treatment from the government.
Health and Physical Toll: Harshina has undergone three C-sections, endured five years with the foreign object, had a major operation to remove the scissors, and a subsequent surgery in May in the same area. She is suffering from constant pain and physical exhaustion due to the multiple surgeries.
Medical Outlook: According to her current doctors, the difficulties and pain caused by the numerous surgeries are likely to last “until death.”
Impact on Family: Due to her poor health, she finds it very difficult to care for her three young children, struggling with simple tasks like sending them to school. She becomes exhausted and bedridden after standing for just half an hour.
Financial Hardship: The prolonged medical expenses and inability to work have led to severe financial difficulties, forcing them to close their furniture distribution business and move from Kollam. They currently lack the financial capacity even to seek comprehensive treatment.
The Demand: Harshina’s main demand is for urgent financial assistance from the government to get the necessary expert medical treatment and a resolution to her case, calling the government’s current stance “inhumane.”
